What is a Mindful Triathlon?
That was exactly what I was thinking when my family asked me to join them for this Mindful Triathlon here in San Diego. It was Mothers Day and they thought it would be a fun day for us Mom’s. Everyone is so busy and we don’t always get to spend time together so this was a real treat.
So what the heck is a Wanderlust, well it’s a 5Kish race, 75 minutes of Yoga and then 30 minutes of quiet meditation. Yes I know “quiet” meditation and me not a combination you would ever think of. This was to be held at Liberty Station here in San Diego, a very common area for races and kind of a fun place to hang out afterwards.
I went to this race with my sister Debi who has been amazing through this journey, two of my nieces Kimberly and Keli and Keli’s friend Tina, an awesome group of woman and I was thrilled to be spending the day with them.
So first the race and for this race I really wanted to see what I could do, run wise. The others were going to just walk it, but were very supportive of me challenging myself. So once to the start line I am off and I really felt good doing this run. Now understand there was no timing chip, no race timer at the end, so I had to make sure that I had my trackers going. I ran more of this than I have any other race and was doing really well and then it was the finish line. What the heck, where is the rest of the race. When they said it was a 5kish run they were not kidding. My Fitbit tracker showed that this run was 2.76, that is way under a 5k but a run is a run. I did pretty good I kept a 12:38 pace, not bad for someone who 4 months ago was sporting about a 19-20 min pace.
Now we move to the Yoga part of this Mindful Triathlon and this is going to be good. I have done very minimal yoga usually when my niece Kimberly was visiting her mom she would get us all to do yoga. This was challenging as I don’t have great balance. We got our spots on the lawn and it quickly became apparent that this was going to be a little hot yoga as the sun was out and bearing down. The yoga starts and pretty much from the start I really had a tough time. Some of the yoga moves I just could not get but it was fun watching the girls doing them. By the time the yoga was done and we were to move on to the meditation it was so HOT! it was decided at that time that we were going to skip the meditation as everyone was really over heated.
